The thought of buying an RV can be an exciting prospect. It doesn’t just provide transportation; it gives you a home away from home for so much of the year. An RV is where you will have some of the best vacations of your life. It may be tempting to simply look at the space and amenities of an RV when buying one, but there are several major features to consider when deciding which one you want to purchase.
There are primarily two different types of RV’s that you can purchase. One is a towable RV, and the other is one that you drive yourself, or a motorized RV. Which one you select basically depends on your needs as a family. Both have their pros and cons, and all features should be considered. You should take into account the distance you plan to travel each year, the towing mechanism you have available to tow the RV if you selected a non-motorized RV, and the kinds of roads on which you will be traveling. You also want to look at the amount of space needed and your comfort level driving an RV yourself.
The weight capacity is another key feature to consider when purchasing an RV. They are much heavier than ordinary cars. (Think “small house.”) Along with all the personal belongings and appliances you are carrying in your RV, you must be aware of the weight rating, the tow rating, and the net carrying capacity. This knowledge will help you avoid disasters you could face on the way, as well as any towing problems you could experience with your truck or SUV, providing you are towing the RV. Knowing how many people can safely be loaded into the RV as well as any special vehicles you intend to bring along - such as off road vehicles, motorcycles, etc. - are important factors as well.
Be sure to evaluate the living systems built into the RV, such as waste and sewage facilities. You’ve got to have a power source (generator) that will run all these items, and you need to ensure they accommodate all the needs of the family and friends you are taking with you on a trip.
